The short version
MegaCleaner scans and cleans locally. File names, paths, and scan results never leave your Mac. The app sends one anonymous daily heartbeat, and it transmits feedback only when you choose to submit it.
What the app does
MegaCleaner scans directories on your Mac to identify files that can be safely cleaned up. All scanning and cleaning happens locally. No file names, paths, sizes, or any other information about your files is sent anywhere.
Anonymous usage statistics
MegaCleaner is free, so once per day the app sends a small heartbeat ping to megacleaner.app/api/heartbeat. This is the only signal we have to know how many people actively use the app. The ping contains:
- A random installation ID generated on first launch (not tied to your name, email, or any other identifier)
- App version and build number
- macOS version
- System locale (e.g.
en_US)
We do not collect: your name, email, file names, file paths, scan results, feature usage, click data, or any other information.
Our server also receives Cloudflare's country code derived from the request so statistics can be aggregated by country. Analytics Engine retains these heartbeat events according to Cloudflare's service retention window.
Because MegaCleaner is a small free app and this single ping is the only way to gauge whether anyone is using it, this heartbeat cannot be disabled. If you'd rather not send it, please don't install MegaCleaner.
Feedback you choose to send
The in-app feedback form is optional. When you submit it, we receive your message, feedback type, app version, macOS version, and your email address only if you provide one. Feedback is stored in our Cloudflare database and forwarded to our private support channel so we can respond and diagnose problems.
We store a one-way hash derived from the request IP address to enforce rate limits; the raw address is not stored with the feedback record. Feedback and rate-limit records are retained only while needed for support, abuse prevention, and service operation. You may contact us to request deletion of feedback associated with an email address you supplied.
Updates
MegaCleaner checks for app updates via Sparkle, the standard macOS update framework. The check fetches a static appcast file from GitHub. MegaCleaner does not add scan or file data to that request; GitHub and network providers receive ordinary request metadata such as an IP address and user agent.
Website
This website uses Meta Pixel and the X (Twitter) Universal Website Tag to measure download conversions from advertising. Download attribution may send browser and request information, including IP address and user agent, to Meta and X. We use the resulting data in aggregate to understand which channels drive installs; we don't sell it.
The only data stored locally is your theme preference (dark/light) in your browser's localStorage.
